Honda accord review/road test

May 16, 2017Steven Carter

The Honda Accord is a great family car. It is well equipped and luxurious as well. It is a great alternative to Ford Mondeo but has the same appeal of BMW 3 Series or Mercedes C-Class. It’s lovely styling and high build quality makes it one of the most preferred cars today. Here is a detailed review of this outstanding car.

Performance, engines, and drive

Honda Accord is available in either a two-door coupe or a four-door sedan. It offers four cylinder or six cylinder engine choices. You can compare this car with Vauxhall Insignia, Mondeo, and Volkswagen Passat. Honda Accord has two petrol engines and one diesel unit. They all perform well. The entry level 2.0 liter i-VTEC petrol has 154 bhp. It is very smooth. On the other hand, the 198 bhp 2.4-litre i-VTEC is very quick. The diesel unit can reach 62 mph in 9.4 seconds. 278 bhp 3.5-liter V-6 is available on the Accord EX-L. The EX-L V6 coupe drivers can select a six-speed manual transmission. There is the new sedan-only Accord hybrid that depends on a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder. It has two AC motor/generations to provide 212 horsepower.

CO2, MPG, and cost of running

In terms of emissions and economy, it is a little behind Ford Mondeo and Volkswagen Passat. Ford Mondeo has ECOnetic technology and Volkswagen Passat has BlueMotion technology. These technologies reduce the running costs. ‘Start/stop’ technology is not available in Honda Accord. The car provides poor fuel consumption. Their emissions are high as well with 159/km for 2.0-litre engine and 199g/km for a 2.4-litre engine. The 2.2-litre i-DTEC diesel engine is better as it’s much refined and smoother. It can manage 53.3 mpg on its’ combined cycle and has 138g/km of CO2.

Design, interior and technology

The design of Honda Accord is not as good as the rivals, say Honda Civic. It has excellent build quality and has solid-feeling switchgear. The design is better than Ford Mondeo or Vauxhall Insignia. It has alloy wheels and cruise control. The Type-S models have larger wheels and a leather interior. The Honda Accord ES has a leather steering wheel and gear knob. There are cruise control and USB connectivity as well. There is a dual-zone automatic climate control system There is a steering-wheel-mounted audio system as well. Bluetooth and a rearview camera are available. The Honda sensing is available in various models, but the Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is available on the higher-end models. These models also have a navigation system.

Comfort, boot space and practicality

The size of Honda Accord can be deceptive. It looks large from the outside. But inside it is actually smaller. The saloon model has a narrow boot and about 497-litres boot space only. The Honda Accord Tourer has more boot space. The boot space here is 1,183 liters.

Reliability and safety

Honda Accord is one of the safest cars within its cars. It got a top score of 5- stars in the Euro NCAP crash safety tests. There are lots of safety equipment in the various models of Honda Accord range. There are six airbags, electronic stability control (ESP), anti-whiplash front headrests, etc.

The new models of Honda Accord are spacious, fuel efficient and very comfortable. If you are looking for a decent all-rounder car then you should buy Honda Accord. It is a great family car as it has lots of safety and other features.
